AC MILAN 0 – 2 ARSENAL : Arsenal end bad run as Mkhitaryan and Aaron Ramsey find the back of the net.
Hardly will you find a manager in world football right now under more pressure than Arsene Wenger. The Frenchman’s side have been in dismal form coming into this game on the back of 4 straight defeats. The Gunners needed to put in a good performance. A heavy defeat would surely signal what would be the final nail in Arsene’s coffin as manager of Arsenal football club.
Finally, the Arsenal team showed up and with the help of goalscorers Mkhitaryan and Ramsey and they just might be a glimmer of hope for what has been a disappointing season for the side from North London.
A poor result again against Watford and question on Wenger’s future will undoubtedly be the topic of discussion but for now the Frenchman gets somewhat of a breather.
The Gunners had to do some defending in the opening 5 minutes and were a whisker a way from conceding after Bonaventura came close to latching unto a cross from Suso.
Slowly Arsenal got into the game and soon enough they found their rhythm. Mkhitaryan fired into the side net after a move which saw Jack Wilshere and Ozil combine superbly.
On the 15th minute the Arsenal were a goal up. A somewhat luck goal after Mkhitaryan shot took a big deflection off Leonardo Bonucci and went past a helpless Donnaruma. It was just what Wenger and his side needed, a bit of luck and good fortune after such a torrid couple of weeks.
The goal sparked confidence into the Arsenal team and the likes of Wilshere and Mkhiaryan were proving to be a thorn in the side of the Milan defence. The former was playing in his preferred No 10 role and dictating the tempo of the game while the latter was proving to be a menace to the Milan defence from the left hand of the Arsenal attack.
Milan who haven’t conceded a goal since February 10 seemed somewhat stunned by the Arsenal team they were playing against and Gattuso who had sparked a renaissance from the Rossoneris was an animated figure for the better part of the first half.
Calum Chambers forced Donnarumma into a good save at his near post before Welbeck fired straight at the Milan keeper when sent clean through in the 43rd minute.
A 2 goal lead by the Gunners before the break wouldn’t have been a fluke as Mkhitaryan could have done better with his effort after a rapid counter attack.
Arsenal weren’t to be denied a second goal after Midfield Maestro Ozil unlocked the Milan defence with a brilliant through pass to Aaron Ramsey who was as cool ice in finishing past Donnaruma.
Milan mustered a second half response, Bonaventura firing over before Suso lashed wildly wide from a good position in the closing stages.
Even then, it was Welbeck who missed the best opportunity of the second half, failing to finish after Franck Kessie’s near-calamitous back pass.
Arsenal might well have a fighting chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season and winning an elusive European trophy. Arsene’s coffin might yet not be nailed and buried after all.
Wenger would be hoping for more of the this sort of performance from his Arsenal team if they stand any chance of salvaging their lacklustre season.
