UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid Beat PSG 2-1 To Advance To Quarter Finals

Real Madrid beat PSG 2-1 To Advance

It was always a hard ask for Ligue 1 Champions, PSG to overturn a 3-1 deficit against Real Madrid at the Parc Des Princes.

Without their world record signing, Neymar Jr, the task went from herculean to impossible.

Angel Di Maria made a rare Champions League start while Kimpembe was out of the team for Thiago Silva at central defense. Di Maria, who appeared to have been handed the duty to dictate play in place of Neymar had one of those nights where nothing he did seemed to go right.

A minute of silence was observed for Davide Astori, the Fiorentina captain who passed away recently.

At the end of the minute of silence, PSG extended their respect to Madrid on the pitch and throughout the first half, they never displayed the urgency of a team which came into the tie 3-1 on aggregate.

The uneventful first half saw both teams struggle to create any real chances and it was a relief when the game burst to life in the second half.

With PSG fans reducing visibility with flares, Cristiano Ronaldo only needed his instinct to rise and put Madrid ahead.

Marco Veratti did not make matters easier for PSG when he was shown a red card. Despite PSG managing to get a goal through a fortuitous touch by Edisonn Cavani, they never quite looked like making it a contest.

With ten men, PSG were effectively out of the contest and a deflection off Casemiro’s shot helped Real Madrid extend their lead to 2-1(5-2 agg). The result will now put Unai Emery’s future in the balance given the disappointing nature of the two Champions League campaigns he has now handled for the French club.
