Tottenham will have Harry Kane to thank after a late equalizer on Saturday prevented what would have been one of the biggest upsets in FA Cup history in recent time. Newport County, a lowly League Two side will feel like they had punched above their weight and deserved to win on Saturday but Harry Kane had other plans.
Padraig Arnold put Newport ahead in the first half after his header beat Vorm and until the 82nd minute when Spurs forced a replay thanks to an equaliser, the League Two team were allowed to dream.
To be sure, this was a Tottenham team which had Dele Alli, Wanyama, Trippier and Son Heung Min on the pitch but Newport’s determination to put bodies behind the ball served them well. Mauricio Pochettino had words of praise for the opposition after the match; “They were superb,” Pochettino said. “Full credit to them. We were disappointed in the first half. The second half in the last 30 minutes we played and created chances and deserved the draw. Yes, we are happy to stay in the competition. We cannot use the excuse of the pitch. I think we need to look at ourselves.”
Harry Kane’s 82nd minute tap-in now means that Newport will travel to Wembley for a replay and will they hope to pull off yet another upset?
Newport’s coach, Michael Flynn was delighted despite the late equalizer; “I would be lying if I said I wasn’t. I think because of the finances and the way football is now it would have been the best result in the Cup. It’s not the highest but it would have been the biggest. I can’t speak highly enough of my players. We’ve come up against a class team, a class club and a class manager.”
